Understanding Your State

How do I know what nervous system state I'm in?

Notice your body first: a racing heart, tight chest, and speeding thoughts point to Sympathetic (fight-or-flight). Numbness, flatness, and low energy point to Dorsal Vagal (shutdown). Ease, steady breath, and a sense of connection point to Ventral Vagal (safe). What does it feel like to be in fight-or-flight (Sympathetic state)?

Racing heart, shallow or fast breathing, tense muscles (especially jaw, shoulders, and hands), racing or looping thoughts, irritability, and an urge to move, argue, or flee. Your voice often speeds up or rises in pitch. This is your body mobilizing for a threat, real or perceived.

What is dorsal vagal shutdown?

Dorsal Vagal shutdown is your nervous system's last-resort protective response, triggered when fight or flight isn't possible or hasn't worked. It shows up as numbness, disconnection, brain fog, exhaustion, flat affect, or a sense of going through the motions. It is a protective response, not a personal failing.

What is Ventral Vagal state?

Ventral Vagal is the "safe and connected" state in Polyvagal Theory — your nervous system's home base. You feel grounded, present, and able to engage with others. Breathing is easy and your voice sounds steady and warm. Regulation practices aim to help you return to this state, not eliminate the other two.

What is the difference between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system?

The sympathetic nervous system mobilizes your body for action — fight or flight. The parasympathetic nervous system, largely governed by the vagus nerve, supports rest, digestion, and connection. Polyvagal Theory further splits the parasympathetic branch into two states: Ventral Vagal (safe and socially engaged) and Dorsal Vagal (shutdown and conservation).

Regulation & Practice

How long does it take to regulate your nervous system?

A single technique — a few rounds of extended-exhale breathing, a short grounding exercise — can shift your state within a few minutes. Building longer-term nervous system resilience, so you return to Ventral Vagal more easily and stay there longer, is a gradual practice built over weeks of consistent, brief check-ins rather than one-time fixes.

Can your voice reveal your nervous system state?

Yes. Speech pace, pause patterns, pitch variation, and vocal tension all shift with your autonomic state — a faster, higher, clipped voice often reflects Sympathetic activation, while a flat, slow, monotone voice often reflects Dorsal Vagal shutdown. Is nervous system regulation the same as meditation?
