Technique Library
Breathing, grounding, and somatic techniques, organized by the nervous system state they're built for. In the app, WhisprJournal picks the right one for you automatically based on your voice — here's a preview of what's inside.
Sympathetic — Fight or Flight
Racing heart, tight chest, speeding thoughts. These techniques use extended exhales and slowing patterns to calm activation.
4-7-8 Breathing
Inhale for 4, hold for 7, exhale for 8. The long exhale is the active ingredient — it signals your body to downshift out of activation.
Box Breathing
Equal-count inhale, hold, exhale, hold (4-4-4-4). Used by everyone from athletes to first responders to steady an activated system fast.
Coherent Breathing
Slow, even breathing at roughly 5-6 breaths per minute, sustained over a few minutes to bring heart rate variability back into a calmer rhythm.
Progressive Muscle Release
Tense and release major muscle groups in sequence — jaw, shoulders, hands — to discharge the physical bracing that comes with fight-or-flight.
Dorsal Vagal — Shutdown & Freeze
Numbness, flatness, low energy, disconnection. These techniques gently re-engage the body without overwhelming it.
5 Senses Grounding
Name one thing you can see, hear, touch, smell, and taste. Brings attention back into the present moment and the body.
Energizing Box Breath
A brisker variation of box breathing, with shorter holds, designed to gently rev the system rather than deepen the stillness of shutdown.
TRE (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises)
Gentle, structured movements that invite the body's natural tremor-release mechanism to discharge stored tension.
CRM Resourcing
Comprehensive Resource Model-inspired resourcing — orienting to a felt sense of support or strength to gently build capacity before deeper processing.
Ventral Vagal — Safe & Connected
Grounded, present, able to engage. You don't need to be fixed here — these practices help you notice and anchor the feeling.
Warm Affirmation Check-in
A brief moment to name what safety feels like right now, so it's easier to recognize and return to later.
Gratitude Anchor
Naming one specific thing (or person) connected to this settled feeling, to reinforce the association.
Natural Rhythm Breathing
No counting, no correction — just a minute of noticing your breath as it already is, to build awareness of your baseline.
